Crystal Amrine Ferreira – Community Liaison

Crystal Amrine Ferreira, Community Liaison, Language Exchange of Northern ColoradoI am by turns a writer, traveler, and seeker of all that is odd, adventurous, and ridiculous. Born in California with an insatiable appetite for the raison d’être, I have traveled extensively during my youth and was homeschooled while living in Mexico. I am currently deciding where to travel to next.

From an early age, I found myself to be a voracious reader of books about adventures in foreign lands and a bit of a smarty-pants who loved to read the dictionary. I graduated early, and for some reason, the United States government sees fit to pay for me to get a degree in International Relations, with a focus in Latin American Studies and International Development, which I’m sure that upon graduation will further galvanized my wanderlust and make me even less qualified for a normal career.

I also am a proud mother of James, my 4 year old son. Although I reconciled myself to the fact that having a child preordained me to an unexciting job for the sake of stability, I was determined not to go gently into that good night.  I yearned for a hook, a twist, a path less followed.  Fortunately, I discovered a liking and an aptitude for foreign cultures and languages. No surprise there, really; I'm frequently discovering likings and aptitudes.  That is what dilettantes do.

Nevertheless, working in a multi-cultural environment at a school that my son could attend seemed worth pursuing. Foreign Languages are important to International Relations, I reckoned, and mixing the two might rescue me from a lifetime of working at an unexciting job. So, here I am working at Language Exchange while James goes to classes, and loving it.

For now, I live in Fort Collins, in a house. I’m not quite sure if it’s my thing, yet, (I think I need more houseplants), but there are things you do for love and this is one of them. I aspire to write a book and to one day have a home abroad, a wrinkle-dog and go Salsa dancing in the Caribbean, though not necessarily in that order.
