Melissa North - Customer Service Manager

Melissa North, Customer Service Manager, Language Exchange of Northern Colorado I am mother to two beautiful boys, Rowan 5 and Indiana 2.  I married the most supportive and wonderful man in the world, Ryan ten years ago.  Our family is close but expanded to include, my grandmother, Dr. Lucy Cabieles, and the family dog Bailey.

My country, the USA, has had a rich although short history.  I think my proudest moment was the signing of the emancipation proclamation in 1863, by Abraham Lincoln.  I think it set the tone for our country.  I also appreciate the fact that we are a melting pot.

This institution is my sister’s brainchild, and thus has also become a member of the family.  I am happy to teach English to whoever wants to learn.  I also loved  my experiences living in Japan and am happy to share my knowledge of the country and the language with all.  Growing up in Los Angeles, I know the importance of living in a diverse community and all the richness it adds to one’s life.  I feel deeply that we all must learn about each other and embrace our differences and our similarities, its what makes this world so beautiful.

The students and faculty at LEXNC remind me on a daily basis why we are here, and the importance of diversity in our lives.

Currently, I am a freshman veterinary student at Colorado State University.  I also work at the diagnostic lab for the veterinary teaching hospital.  What free time I have left I enjoy reading books, baking, cooking ethnic foods, and of course spending time with my family.

I think Fort Collins is wonderful.  And although at the outset it seems to be a homogenous culture, it has great diversity if one looks for it.  I also love the yummy restaurants, like Taj Majal,  Nyala, and Lucille’s.

I have been fortunate enough to visit all continents except Antarctica, but I will go there someday as well.  Among my favorite places are: Japan, Italy, Thailand, Colombia, and New Zealand.

I don’t know that I have one unique experience, but I must say that learning languages has opened up many doors in my life and taken me to places I never would have imagined.
